Trillanes, the Terrible

Not like Ivan. Was it Ivan? Anyway, this “accused” mutineer who led the Magdalo group in storming the Ascott hotel (formerly known as Oakwood) last 2003 has done it again. After a few months of getting elected as a senator, he blames the government for the Glorietta bombing, and now this.

I’m seeing a pattern here.

When he thinks he’s getting screwed, he convinces other fellow soldiers that they are being screwed too. Then starts organizing forces to storm a luxurious hotel. And now he does the same thing. AGAIN.

Speculation abound, here’s what I think of what was really going on inside the mind, or what’s left of it, of Trillanes.

Xmas Wish List Addendum

What is the plural of addendum? Addenda? Anyway, my previous article listed things you can buy for your geeky loved one for Christmas. Those things have a price range from practical to extravagant. Does cost matter when you’re buying something for your loved one? For me, not really. I just don’t like seeing what I bought that cost an arm and a leg to simply gather dust in the corner after about a week or so. As long as the gift keeps giving for a long time, I consider that money well-spent.

No matter how much I try to avoid saying it, I just can’t help it. After the previous article, I simply have to say “BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!”

Stopping Content Theft

In my previous post entitled “Spimmers,” I mentioned resources that would help bloggers protect their original content thru WordPress plugins and included links to pages that outline ways on how to deal with spimmers once they are found out. In addition to those resources, Lorelle on WordPress has written a very nice article about the best tips in dealing with spimmers or scrapers. One of them is another plugin that not only prevents content theft but generates fake content so that the reader visiting a scraper’s site is also informed that the site they visited might be leeching off of other people’s work. This is what Antileech is all about.

A geek’s Xmas wish list

The Christmas holidays are upon us and, as we celebrate the birth of the foundation of a religion, we also tend to capitalize, and in turn, be victims of capitalism, during the festivities by participating in the madness that is Christmas gift-giving. Does anyone still remember the saying that it’s “the thought that counts?” Anyway, before I rant on about people not giving a rat’s ass anymore about the feelings of the giver by becoming ultimately selfish and throwing a bitch fit because the recipient did not get exactly what they want, I’ll try to share what I know when it comes to Christmas gift-giving, for the geek you love.

Ashamed: The Vista Experience

I just bought a new laptop last Friday and, being an advocate of Open Source and everything that is Linux-related, I’m ashamed to admit that Vista, at least Vista Home Premium, was, well, okay, so to speak. What made me realize it was ok was mostly the hardware it was running on.

The Blue Notebook, equipped with an Intel Core Duo processor, a gig of RAM, 120 gigs of storage space, a dual-layer multi-dvd burner, and a lot of bells and whistles, simply hummed away while running Microsoft’s latest abomination. The notebook, which I’m officially dubbing as BB (as in B.B. King), has bluetooth, firewire, and USB connectivity, as well as a built-in dialup modem and LAN card. The notebook earns two-thumbs-up, as it has technology that can keep up with the times, or at least for a couple of years, and is relatively cheap at PhP 36K (roughly US$ 840). Systems with the same specs averages around PhP 45-60K (US$ 1075 – 1400). What was amazing with BB was that there were buttons that aren’t really buttons. It’s like a touch screen, except that it’s not on the screen, but on the casing itself, and there’s a volume control that you just slide your finger on the bar to increase or decrease the volume, much like the one on an iPod.

…all because of a twit.

Technosailor’s post about the Valleyboys (Silicon Valley, that is) and their inclination to making money simply raises the question for the Valleyboys (and others) to answer themselves: Is it REALLY about the money?

Spimmers

This post originally appeared in “Spimmers « Gormful” but I felt it needs to be spread around to the ends of the world. So here it is in this blog.

==================================================

Spimmers, an amalgamation of the words “Spinners” and “Spammers,” is a new breed of pests that are to be loathed and stoned to death as they steal intellectual properties, particularly blog entries. They scrape your site’s content and replace synonyms of words on your posts, trying to pass off your work as their own. The bastards.
