Chelsea, the Heartbreaker

If you can read this, it means that gormful.com lives. Anyway, the second leg of the semifinals for the UEFA Championship league is truly an edge-of-your-seat event as Chelsea tried to grab one of the slots for the finals, and failed. Liverpool's Agger's goal on the 22nd minute of the game put Chelsea and Liverpool's aggregate score to 1-1. After much diving and pleading with the ref for a favorable call, at the end of regulation, the score still stood at one-nil. An extra time was given and fans were again delighted as their team has another 15 minutes to score the winning goal. Both teams showed their fortitude with their defense as the game is, once again, forced into a second extra time of 15 minutes. But both teams proved to be evenly matched as no one scored a goal to break the aggregate tie. Then the game went into penalties. Liverpool and Chelsea were evenly matched during regulation and extra time, but on the shootout, Liverpool edged Chelsea converting all four attempts to goals while their counterparts were only successful once. Liverpool wins 1-0 over Chelsea during a 4-1 penalty shootout. Chelsea, in which I am dubbing "The Heartbreakers," didn't play as well as expected. Their passes ended up in Liverpool's hands, or in this case, feet. I saw a lot of miscommunication that resulted in Liverpool having possession of the ball almost 70% of the time. Chelsea's performance is so disappointing that some might think they sold out. Inbound throws were directly received by Liverpool, which affirmed my suspicions. I have no proof, however, so it's all just speculation. Maybe the pressure of being able to win four championships this season got to them already so , to quote an old cliche, the dog who wanted the second bone ended up with having none. Hopefully, Chelsea will be able to win the other championships, with the FA cup an exception. It belongs to Manchester United. Anyway, this post is dedicated to Ton, an avid fan of Chelsea FC. I know how you feel. However, you should also know that I have to rub it in. Don't worry, there's always next season.

Washington - chelsea fan but now rooting for milan said...
You bloody sod... I was smiling all the way through this post until I saw the most diabolical combination of words futbol has ever known: "It belongs to Manchester United."

I bloody hope you're not rooting for Manchester because [to paraphrase (and by this, I mean totally alter the meaning) Vinnie Jones in Euro Trip] "If you're a Mank, you're a WANK!"

This is a nice post, though. Pretty much covered the game for me. I wouldn't be totally surprised if you're correct with your allusion to the supposed "throwing of the towel." It's common. I'll be deeply rotting saddened if it is true, though. If any team in the Prem is worthy of a win, it has always been The Blues. They play the game, not at its finest, but with their best; they run farther than the opposing team, they're not talent-busted (with the exception of the Schevchenko transfer, pretty much everybody in the roster is a role player in his own right. Yes. Even Didier.) It makes watching Chelsea win and the feeling of euphoric exuberance easily attainable. With the Red Devils, everyone in the roster can score a goal, so scoring is easy. With The Blues, you know that every goal was hard-earned, not by just one player, but by the whole team.

This is my farewell to OUR Champions League hopes. It's now up to Kaka' and my future Champions League bet.
