Dek: Another New Shiny
Since WordPress released a new version, I decided to buy a new desktop PC. No. Not really. In my last post, I mentioned that my lappy’s days are numbered. Well, those numbers are dwindling very fast since I have bought me parts already that would run if only I had the money for a monitor. But no, I didn’t. So my lappy’s life is still prolonged due to my financial crisis. Another week and I’m sure I’ll be able to buy the monitor and other accessories so I can finally do some work properly. At home.
I used to be an Intel advocate, but seeing AMD’s improvements with their chips, I decided to go the Athlon way. So for the processor, I bought the X2 4400 chip. For the board, I bought the nVidia chipset powered ECS board. And an nVidia GeForce FX6600LE for the video. Although I have the nVidia powered mobo and video, my purpose for building this machine is not for games. Well, not just for games. The main reason I chose this mobo and video card is the price. Dirt cheap and practical, who wouldn’t? Also, the mobo has built-in audio (which I don’t mind using since I won’t be recording any songs that need clarity), a lot of USB ports (which I seem to be running out of lately), and gigabit ethernet. And a 2GB Transcend DDR2800 stick of RAM.
Things I have to do next would include dusting off the Linksys Wireless B router so my wife can still use lappy while I use Dek. OK, that’s not my desktop’s official name yet, but I think I’ll stick with it for now. Add to that the reconfiguration of my table, for the nth time, to accomodate the new member of the family.
Shopping for the parts for Dek was a breeze, thanks to the helpful folks over at PC Express Gilmore. It was surprising to find out that the prices went down, and a lot, compared to last week’s prices. Good thing I waited, but I think if I waited for another week, the prices will go down further. But it was just another itch I had to scratch.
So a lot of the items in my shopping list got crossed out, but I had to add another item to the list, a SATA power cable for my DVD burner, since the power supply unit that came with the casing only had one SATA power connector. And an internal card reader in place of a floppy drive. Hopefully, I’ll be able to buy the monitor et al. before the week ends.
In a more geeky note, I just got my prescription glasses. I look like a dork then. Now I look like a certified geek. I feel better now.
oi dude! i haven’t been anywhere. work and home really. you get to work and work your ass off. first time again in years. i miss petiks time, and yes, hypoallergenic really pwns.
So true.
XPS is the Gaming line of Dell. So if you have money to burn that would be a good choice aside from Alienware.
I’m not going to say bad things about that kind of systems because I might be working for them soon haha…
I still like building custom rigs rather buying a complete system. It is just easier to replace the parts on a custom rig than those branded ones.
But I’m eyeing on Dell’s 22″ incher LCD, I think their HDCP compatible already. But of course I still like Samsung’s 226bw.
The no. 1 rule in building rigs, is don’t be contented to one shop, look around.. and you’ll find better deals. hehe…
@keysi: That XPS is a real hummer. And yes, I know how expensive baby formula is. Hope your kid doesn’t need the lactose-free or hypoallergenic variant. That would be more expensive than the premium baby formula. Where have you been, by the way?
hey dude, congrats on your new desktop. my desktop’s slowly dying. quick fix = new videocard, but i delayed and delayed and delayed buying because milk is WTFLOLBBQ expensive. anyway, have you seen this?
@vance: I definitely know how you feel. Frustrations abound.
LOL, Aren’t we all.. I also can’t wait to upgrade to Core 2 Duo… but I don’t have enough money and plus things comes up that I spend the money on that instead, e.g failing HDD..
@vance: That would be the problem. I can’t wait anymore. LOL.
Its not a core 2 quad.. Its core 2 duo wolfdale hehe.. Just the plain 2 cores. Hehe.
just a suggestion hehe.
AMD is not a bad processor.. as long as you have a good mobo that has some nifty features will be good. Sadly, AMD’s X2 is not a huge threat to Intel’s Core 2 Duo nowadays. But they are still good for budget system.
If you could have waited for a few more days to months hehe. The prices might still fall down.
@vance: Have to wipe off my drool over those items you suggested. lol. As much as I would have wanted to buy Intel’s Core2 Quad, the main reason I chose those parts were the price. If I’m earning triple of what I’m currently earning, I would’ve bought the high-end parts, not because of my requirements, work-related or otherwise, but because I can.
AMD is good for gaming… hehehe…
I only buy some parts in PC express in Gilmore. I discovered that I can get a better deal in PC Hub since I’m a member of Tipidpc.com.
As for desktop parts I also recommend this:
Intel E8400 2 x 3.0 Ghz with 6Mb Cache
Mobo – Abit Ip35-e 6k or Gigabyte P35 board forgot the model 6k
Rams – team elite ddr2 800 P2400 courtesy of sir jvince_13?!? hehe forgot the TPC member name.
Vcard Palit Nvidia 9600Gt PC Hub less than 8K
Hec or Gigabyte Super B 500watts and up – This will evenly distribute the power through out the system for longer system life
HDD – 320Gb Western Digital or Seagate SATA II with 16Mb cache P4k below nalang ata
or 500gb Western Digital 5k with 2 years shop warranty RSUN or Seagate 6k
writers – Liteon DVD 20X SATA – For better airflow but it doesn’t have a performance increase over the old IDE version.
Of Course if your not into rendering, video editing, photoshop and such AMD will suit you best since its cheaper.. and good For gaming and lite video editing.
As for router Buy a Dlink dir300 2k below Wireless G router backwards compatible na rin siya for wireless B. It can be found on the wireless setting/ configuration of the router.
Just some suggestion hehe
Nice rig you got also.
