Don’t Update Plugins

At least, not immediately. You may be wondering if updating something is a necessity. In truth, yes it is. It is highly necessary to update whatever you have (software, firmware, etc.) to avoid getting your system compromised. However, when it comes to WordPress plugins, whenever a plugin update comes by, make sure you read up on what has been changed. The update may or may not work for your current setup so make sure you have the minimum system requirements, at the least. The reason behind the title of this post is because sometimes, the update is not fully tested and might have severe repercussions once implemented. Although it is not the intention of the plugin author to destroy your site, it is definitely a good idea to beware of whatever update comes by. Take the Akismet plugin update for example. An update (version 2.1.1) was released a few days ago. Now, I'm an update freak myself. If something needs updating, I make sure I update it. However, this time, I decided for this update to wait a little while before I update my Akismet. I first looked at the update on the WordPress plugins page and saw that there were threads near the bottom. Since there were no changes in the description of the plugin, I decided to browse the threads. From there, I found out that there were bugs found in the update, bugs that might render your site useless. Good thing I didn't update my Akismet and went through the hassle of rolling back my plugin. Thankfully, another update (version 2.1.2) was released fixing the bugs previously mentioned in the threads. Now is definitely the time to update Akismet. So my advise to those who udate regularly, do not forget to read up on the threads, changelogs, and whatever is in the update site. You never know if the update will break your site. Always beware of any and all updates that are being released. Make sure to ask around also, just in case you get really paranoid.
