Easter, No Fish, and a whole lot of sleep

It's been a while since my last post, and during the time I wasn't online (I can't believe it myself), I had a chance to reflect on things. Well, it's not really a reflection but more of trying to make sense of something incomprehensible, at least, in the beginning. For example, what does a bunny have to do with Easter, in which all Catholics know as the resurrection of Jesus and the deliverance from sin. Well, at least, that's what they taught us in school. A bunny on one hand, and redemption on the other. It's not quite balanced, is it. Even if the rabbit is made entirely of chocolate. It is mouth-watering to just think about a big chunk of chocolate, even if it's shaped as a cute bunny-rabbit. It's still not balanced. What other people would say is that it's all a marketing ploy to commercialize something solemn as influenced by a capitalist government. They may be right. Another thing that would bug me is the fact that there are going to be Easter egg hunting events. Where do Easter eggs come from? From the Easter bunny? Since when did rabbits lay eggs?! And people painting over the eggs to make it colorful, it's not natural. There just isn't an egg that was originally made with stripes. Pink stripes. That hen better have pink stripes too. The lies that our parents taught us as true when we were little really had no positive effect on us when we grew up. Luckily for me, my parents never believed in the Easter bunny or Easter eggs. Otherwise, I would have ended up believing in something useless. Think about it. What does a bunny give you besides a full stomach? There is no spiritual, moral, economical or financial relevance to the Easter Bunny. Well, there is an economical relevance. It does help retailers and capitalists to earn from it by selling a 250 gram chocolate Easter Bunny for about $15 to $20, with the only difference from a chocolate bar worth about $3 is that it is shaped like a bunny. The other thing that makes me wonder is that Catholics must refrain from eating meat (beef, pork and chicken). They say Catholics have to fast and/or abstain from consuming meats mentioned above. Why?! Was there a shortage of meat back then that we have to mimic what the early Catholics consumed? Or were they just trippin when the Church told the Catholics that they should not eat meat or they will burn in Hell? Will I burn in Hell, now that I ate meat (a spiced Ham sandwich)? Do I get a lighter penalty in Hell because I only ate spiced Ham and the others ate steaks? Is my God that strict? And now it begs the question, if God is Love, why would God smite me if I disobey one of his "policies?" I think the Church has to get their act together cause a lot of people are getting confused already, myself included. I will not dare nor even think about daring to answer this question. If you want an answer to this question, you're better off asking the Pope, or at least a priest in your parish. If I were to answer that question, I wouldn't give an answer but a philosophy: "Live and let live." This is what happens when you get a lot of time off and all you did was sleep.

As for this:
The other thing that makes me wonder is that Catholics must refrain from eating meat (beef, pork and chicken). They say Catholics have to fast and/or abstain from consuming meats mentioned above. Why?!
The meat thing is actually quite old, as in it was done in the past. I can't remember where I heard this, but I remember that meat is some sort of common thing for the old Catholics...think of it as chocolate for them. I remember a friend telling me that instead of abstaining from meat, I could abstain from something else I really, really love, like, well, chocolates. It's part of all the rituals and practices that Catholics have, and it's a way to remember Christ's sufferings on the Cross by giving up meat.

No, God will not punish you for eating meat during Lent, because He's not like that. It's not a "policy" per se, but more of a practice, just like going to mass. If some people made you think like that, then they don't know God as much as they do. Fasting and abstinence is a way for us to reflect on the really important things in life. It's not a punishment, it's entirely a personal decision for one to do fasting and abstinence. :D

Haha did I make sense? Last na, this is my favorite "reason" for fasting/abstaining: Lent is not about giving things up and making those around miserable. Its about looking at your life and seeing what is keeping you from Jesus.

Yun lang po. :) Happy Easter. =) God bless!

Eggs and Bunnies on Easter » Refine Me said...
[...] Will asked something about the relationship of eggs and bunnies on a Christian holiday, Easter, which celebrates Christ’s resurrection. I never really thought about it, really. I have to admit that I’ve participated in Easter Egg Hunts (not winning anything, though) but I’ve never had an Easter chocolate bunny (is it really that good?). [...]

Hi Tina,
Just thinking out loud. You did raise good points there. I just didn't mean this post to be that serious though. Hehehe.
Hope you had a great Easter. :)

I actually wanted to follow the no fish rule (semi-devout Catholic that I am), but no such luck, mainly because I hate most fish recipes. Alas.

Also, the easter eggs and bunny thing isn't Catholic. The Easter Bunny is their equivalent to Santa. I have absolutely no idea where it came from.

Ade,
I think I should change the title to "No Meat" instead of "No Fish." But that's what I did. I rarely ate fish during lent. Mostly because I forgot that I shouldn't. Hehe.

Keysi,
I'm anxious as to what you're going to write regarding religion. Hehe. Don't get me wrong. I still have faith in the Catholic church. But not as much as I have faith in God him/herself. And there goes another idea. What is God's gender, or does God even have one? Again, just thinking out loud.

Liz,
It's like what they say with smoking and going to the gym: It's bad if you smoke after going to the gym. So I decided not to go to the gym.

Thanks for dropping by. :)
