The Secret of a Great Puzzle
Puzzles are great. Some of them are recreational and can improve brain functions. Some simply impair productivity, and waste a lot of time. But all puzzles have one thing in common. They are always fun.
A puzzle is merely a problem that needs a solution. Let's all admit it: all of us don't like problems. BUT if you present the problem in an amusing way, the problem becomes something of a challenge than a burden. It's true that people don't like problems, but people like challenges. It's a way for people to prove their worth to others.
So how do you make a puzzle interesting? It's all about the backstory of a puzzle. Make it amusing, sounding like someone is in dire need of a solution to a problematic situation. A crossword is okay, but make the crossword part of a story to solve a bigger problem and you have built drama into the puzzle.
It's no secret really. It's just an "A-ha!" moment I recently had. What do you think would make a puzzle great? Sound off by leaving a comment or two. Who knows, your idea might make it into a video game or two.
